To all the dog lovers out there! This is the post for you. Thinking about dog adoption or buying one and confused about what breed you should go for? Here is what Canadians are loving and going for in the dog breeds. With the pandemic shaping so many aspects of our lives this past year, an inspiring trend emerged: A LOT of people have brought new dogs into their homes this past year. Almost half (43%) of Canadian dog owners said they welcomed a new dog into their family during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a recent Rover survey.
See below the infographic with the top 4 breeds that were liked and loved by the Canadians last year:
Labrador Retriever: The most popular dog breed in Canada is our very own Labrador Retriever! Labrador Retrievers have been enormously popular for a quarter of a century now, thanks to their intelligence and gentle nature. According to comedian and Canadian Kennel Club member Ian Lynch, Labs are famously good at working with people, from their origins as aids to hunters and fishers in Newfoundland during the early 1800s, where they helped retrieve nets and ropes from the cold water to their current roles as guide dogs. And they’re not just popular in Canada—Americans love labs too, thanks in no small part to celebrity lab owners like the Clintons, Drew Barrymore, and Minnie Driver.
Golden Retriever: Golden Retrievers might be the most well-known dog breed in all of North America. These family-friendly dogs are known for being great with kids and are easily socialized. Goldens can be classified as either Canadian, American, or English, which can usually be told by their coloring. Goldens are super friendly and very versatile, making them suitable for both urban and rural life.
Mixed Breed: Trust us, not all mixed dogs look like mangy mutts (which come on, are pretty cute too). In fact, here’s a rule of thumb: when one adorable breed mates with another adorable breed, the end results are — wait for it — pretty darn adorable. That’s science, baby!
Goldendoodle: Who doesn’t love poodles? Known for their curly fur that can be cut into some truly amazing hairstyles, poodles are the fourth most popular breed in Canada. There are actually many different sizes and colors of poodles, making it easy to find one suitable for your lifestyle. Standard poodles can reach up to 70 lbs while toy poodles can be as small as 6-9 lbs! Poodles are smart but stubborn dogs. They’re great family dogs but do require physical activity to maintain their muscle mass.
